Getting Started as a PHV Driver

Can I rent a PHV car before getting my PDVL or TDVL?

You can explore our PHV rental options while your PDVL or TDVL application is still in progress. You’re also welcome to visit us for a test drive and speak with our team about the available vehicles.

If you have not yet obtained your PDVL or TDVL, you can still rent the vehicle for personal use. However, a valid PDVL or TDVL is required before you can provide private-hire driving services on Grab, Gojek, Tada, Ryde and Geolah.

What documents are needed for private hire rental?

To get started, make sure you meet the following requirements:

At least 23 years of age OR at least 30 years old at the point of PDVL/TDVL application.
Less than 18 Drivers’ Improvement Points/Demerit Points
Driver’s license of at least 2 year

Can I rent a PHV car to drive for Grab/Gojek/TADA/Ryde/Zig?

Yes. Our cars are eligible to drive on Grab, Gojek, TADA, Ryde & Zig.

What is the difference between car leasing and car rental?

Car leasing is usually suited for longer-term vehicle use, while car rental can support shorter-term or more flexible driving needs. Both options allow drivers to use a vehicle without buying one.

What should I compare before choosing a vehicle?

Before choosing a vehicle, compare factors such as the rental or leasing rate, driving range, charging time, vehicle size, boot space, comfort, and suitability for your daily usage.

For PHV drivers, it is also worth considering your expected daily mileage, charging routine, passenger and luggage needs, and whether the vehicle is eligible for the ride-hailing platforms or service categories you plan to drive for.

Am I able to drive my rented car into Malaysia?

Yes, our cars are VEP & RFID ready and you may drive the car to West Malaysia. Please be reminded to bring the vehicle log card when driving to Malaysia.

Am I able to add a relief driver?

Yes, simply let our sales representative know the details of the additional driver.

Can I rent an EV for both personal and PHV driving?

Yes. You can rent an EV for both personal use and PHV driving, as long as you meet the required PHV licensing and platform eligibility requirements.

For PHV use, you will need a valid PDVL or TDVL, and the vehicle must be eligible for the ride-hailing platform you intend to drive for. For personal use, you can use the car as you would a regular rental vehicle.

Is there a driving mileage limit for PHV rental?

No. Velocity Leasing does not impose a mileage limit on our PHV rental and leasing packages, so you can drive according to your daily needs without worrying about excess mileage charges.

This is especially useful for full-time PHV drivers who may cover higher mileage each month.

Can I test drive the car before renting?

Yes. You’re welcome to arrange for an non-obligatory test drive before renting.

What should I bring along to my appointment with Velocity Leasing?

Kindly bring along the following:

NRIC
Driving License
Valid PDVL/TDVL (if applicable)

If you decide to proceed with the rental, a deposit will be collected. Payment can be made via PayNow.

Yes, EVs can be suitable for PHV driving, especially for drivers who plan charging well and choose a model with enough range for their daily routes. Singapore’s charging network is expanding, which makes EV driving more practical for PHV drivers over time.

Which EV is suitable for full-time PHV driving?

Choosing the best EV rental car for PHV driving in Singapore depends on how you drive, where you pick up passengers, how often you charge, and whether you prioritise rental cost, range, passenger comfort or boot space.

What is the best EV for new PHV drivers?

For new PHV drivers, the Dongfeng BOX may be a practical starting point because it is a more affordable EV rental option. It can help drivers manage daily rental costs while getting used to PHV driving patterns.

Which car has the biggest boot?

The Dongfeng VIGO has the largest boot space of 572 litres in our fleet.

Other wide boot options include the Dongfeng 007, with 452 litres, and the BYD Atto 3, with 440 litres of boot space.

If boot space is important for luggage, airport trips or daily PHV use, these models are worth considering.

Which car model qualify for premium ride category?

The Dongfeng 007 is an approved model for PHV premium jobs on Gojek, Tada and Ryde.

Payment & Contract

How much is the deposit?

The refundable deposit starts from $800.

What is the minimum rental period?

Short term rental options are from 1 to 6 months, subject to availability.

Long term lease options are available from 12 to 36 months.

When or how do I pay my rental charges?

Rental deduction starts on the first day you collect the car. Rental charges are deducted weekly/monthly by GIRO OR paid weekly/monthly by bank transfer/PayNow.
